HEADS UP HORSE LOVERS!

Marty Irby, Executive Director, Animal Wellness Action

Co-author Barbara J. Andrews, Publisher, SAAB

Puppy mill horrors declined when the NetPlaces Network exposed the too-common animal cruelty, but horse and livestock transport has been under the radar… until now.

You see those 48 foot long horse or cattle trucks but probably the only thing you think about is how to get around them. If someone asked what’s in those trucks, you’d say cattle. Your mind would then dismiss the subject because, well, because you eat beef. And if someone said “No, that truck is carrying pigs to market” your brain would flash on bacon, not animal cruelty.

Heads Up Horse Lovers: Hold this horrifying photo in your mind… Pigs are said to be more intelligent than dogs did that this pig sense his destination destiny!

Hold this horrifying photo in your mind… Pigs are said to be more intelligent than dogs. Dog owners might argue but it would be hard to deny that this pig sensed his destination destiny!

Documented reports of animals predicting impending disaster cannot be discounted just because we don’t understand their capabilities. So think about this… Dogs often warn of danger and pig owners swear they are more intelligent than dogs.

You may not own horses and you don’t eat them, if you are a generational American, the love of horses is probably in your genes. When a rancher uses the term horseflesh it is as a description of a living animal, usually one of superior quality… Horseflesh is NOT what’s on your plate or what you feed your dog.

So, when Mr. Irby points out the tremendous transportation risks to both animals in transit and motorists sharing the roadways with those big trucks, you listen.

Heads Up Horse Lovers" “Horses deserve to be transported in as humane a manner as possible on our highways,” said U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN).

Crashes involving horse or cattle trucks have resulted in not only the deaths of the animals but innocent travelers as well. But don’t think about an accident, there’s this…The U.S. Department of Agriculture has openly declared that these vehicles “do not provide adequate headroom for equines,” and that horses are more likely to face injury in excessively long trailers or double-decker trailers. That also applies to cattle and pigs…

The Animal Wellness Foundation applauded U.S. Reps. Steve Cohen (D-TN), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Dina Titus (D-NV), and more than 100 Members of the U.S. House for their reintroduction of the Horse Transportation Safety Act that would ban the transportation of horses across state lines in ‘double-decker’ trucks or trailers. The measure passed the U.S. House in July of 2020 {Ref #1} but failed to be taken up for a vote in the U.S. Senate.

We applaud Reps. Cohen, Fitzpatrick, and Titus for their dedication to protecting our iconic American horses and the reintroduction of the Horse Transportation Safety Act,” said Marty Irby, executive director at Animal Wellness Action, and a past president of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' & Exhibitors' Association who was recently honored by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, II. {Ref #2}

Heads Up Horse Lovers: Horses transported settlers, calvary, and goods that enabled us to conquer and populate this vast country. They made the stagecoach possible. Horses plow our fields and entertain our kids.

Horses transported settlers, cavalry, and goods that enabled us to conquer and populate this vast country. They made the stagecoach possible. Horses plow our fields and entertain our kids. You may be in upscale NY City or the L.A. countryside but the sight of a beautiful horse running “because he can” is thrilling and uplifting. You will agree with these leaders…

Horses deserve to be transported in as humane a manner as possible on our highways,” said U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN). “Double-deck trailers do not provide adequate headroom for adult horses, and accidents involving double-deck trailers are an unnecessary and gruesome reminder that the practice is also dangerous to all of the driving public.

As a society, it is imperative that we protect the welfare of animals, both big and small,” said U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). “As a member of the bipartisan Congressional Animal Protection Caucus and an outspoken defender of animals, I continue to be committed to ensuring that our government is doing its part in promoting animal welfare. I’m proud to stand with Representative Cohen to guarantee the safe and humane treatment of horses on highways and roads.

It’s past time for Congress to close the loophole that encourages horses to be transported in a harmful way,” said U.S. Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV). “I’m proud to co-sponsor this legislation to protect these beautiful animals.

Mr. Irby wants you to know:

The Horse Transportation Safety Act was backed by Animal Wellness Action, the Animal Wellness Foundation, Horses for Life Foundation, the American Horse Protection Society, and the Center for a Humane Economy. It passed July of 2020 and bans “the transportation of horses across state lines in double-deck trailers.

The Animal Wellness Foundation is a charitable organization with a mission of helping animals by making veterinary care available to everyone with a pet, regardless of economic ability. They organize rescue efforts and medical services for dogs and cats.

Animal Wellness Action is a Washington, D.C. helping animals by promoting legal standards forbidding cruelty. To enact good laws, we must elect good lawmakers, and that’s why we remind voters which candidates care about our issues and which ones don’t.
