The shortest but most important reminder of the human and animal heroes that gave their lives to win the freedom you enjoy today.
He was a British pilot killed during the war. This was found in the pocket of his uniform after death. Do our THOUGHTS take wing today or are we "grounded" in the muck of political rhetoric? Do we fight invisible enemies or can our airmen still see the real target?
HIGH FLIGHTJohn Gillespie Mages, Jr.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.
Sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things.
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence, hov’ring there…
I’ve chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through less halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or ever eagle flew.
And while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod the high untresspassed sanctity of space. Put out my hand and touch the face - of God. TheDogPlace.org EST 1998 © May 2020-2211 https://www.thedogplace.org/Prose-and-Poetry/High-Flight-Memorial-Day-Tribute.asp SSI Brought to you by the NetPlaces Network
