THE TWIST IN HUMAN VS. ANIMAL INTELLIGENCEBarbara "BJ" Andrews, Publisher, SAAB Member
When humans came out of caves and began building structures as though we were bigger beavers, it was a big step in human history.
Being slightly smarter than a beaver, early humans built better huts to shelter and store stuff. But of course, humans became overly possessive and so attached to “things” that they ran out of room. So, they had to build a bigger hut.
They looked at wood and figured out how to use it to make a larger, more stable hut which we call a house today. They watched wolves and learned to eat meat. That concentrated protein grew their brains bigger so, unable to dig like wolves, humans hung their meat in trees.
As human packs became “colonies” we added more huts we called houses. In so doing, we separated from each other and enjoyed a newfound privacy. But, getting smarter every day…we realized that privacy meant no close friends to chat with or borrow stuff from. Hmmm… We could build a house that didn’t fall down but we were bored and lonely.
One of our smartest leaders reminded us that other creatures like elephants and wolves, formed friendly herds or packs and helped each other. So, we went back to living in clusters, herds or packs but being human now, we developed more self-interest than any other life-form. That made us strive to outdo each other. We built bigger, better houses and that afforded our children a place to live longer than is natural in nature.
We didn’t understand the animal’s ways of communicating but we got that there was “strength in numbers” so we became people colonies, again like beavers… and when we learned to listen more closely to the sounds other creatures made, we realized that they could communicate about the best feeding grounds or a water hole that never went dry. So early humans learned to make sounds that meant something.
As our brains grew, we began to put away the instinctual things we once knew but we figured out how to make weapons. That made getting meat easier, which made our brains work even better. Better brains made us safer in our environment but it also made us want more of everything so we fought and died to get more “territory” and a bigger following to feed that thing now called “ego”.
Well, you pretty much know how this story ends. Our superior brains drove us to keep wanting more and doing more. That thing called ego grew as big as an oak tree but not everybody knew how clever, inventive and interesting we were so we invented the cell phone…
