CANINE VS. HUMAN LOYALTY?

TheDogPlace.org Staff

Why are dogs the most loyal animal on earth and the only species that will never forsake us even though they could easily survive without us? Is there an answer?

You can kick your dog, forget to feed him and otherwise ignore him but your dog will stay with you. Like the dog that licked Lazarus’ wounds, dogs soothe your soul and avow that you are his “god.”

Does the human brain = better judgement, greater loyalty or morality? The degree of devotion might be a tossup between your family and your dog until you stop and think about it - betray your spouse or beat your children and sooner or later, they will leave you.

Beat your dog and it will cringe and cry out but although self-sufficient since time began, a dog will stay with you until one of you dies. That is profound loyalty and a dog is the only living creature that will do that! You’ve heard of Greyfriars Bobby, the scruffy little terrier that laid on his master’s grave for 14 years. And of course you saw the classic movie “Lassie Come Home” but many dogs have shown similar loyalty. That is simply the way dogs are made.

Even primitive humans recognized that dogs were different. That’s the reason dogs are depicted in ancient cave drawings. Canines are indisputably the world’s most loyal companions and they’ve had a long time to get it right. In fact, dogs are recorded as “man’s best friend” in ancient manuscripts that predate the Bible!

Rutgers University did a study in which, given the choice, toddlers between one and three years old chose to spend more time interacting with live animals than with inanimate toys. Dogs were of course among the animals included in the tests. It doesn’t take super-smart professors to know that kids love dogs and vice-versa but it was an interesting study.

What is equally interesting is that the common canine is the only animal that is psychically attached and tuned into humans.

Granted, there are those who say that elephants often come to love their mahouts and may go into deep depression if they are separated from their human friend. But every other animal, from donkeys and oxen to pet birds will leave you without thought or remorse.

Horses uplift us, both physically and emotionally. Cats purr and they kill rodents… Sheep give us wool and meat. The list is lengthy. Without animals, we humans would be much less. But think. Dogs protect, comfort and help us find food. They allow us to learn and to openly love them. In return we feed them, love, treasure and protect them.

Some might say that DOGS are in our DNA! Certainly the bond between humans and dogs is the strongest and most frequently cited example of loyalty without boundaries.

We at www.TheDogPlace.org hope that you have experienced the amazing loyalty dogs epitomize. No matter your station in life your dog will love you above all else until one of you dies.
