FIRST DOGS IN AMERICA

Barbara "BJ" Andrews, SAAB

Humans entered North America via the Beringia land bridge over 20,000 years ago. Did dogs come with them or did those first immigrants tame wolves as pets, or…?

Think about this - microscopic organisms left clear signals of their presence 3.7 billion years ago. We know a lot about dinosaurs and the duck-billed platypus as being among the “first living mammals” but the fact is that we know nothing about the origin of dogs!!!

While there are plenty of professional opinions, the FACT is no one knows. That’s because there is no archeological proof of where dogs originated. None. The world’s first public website, www.TheDogPlace.org established that fact in 1998 and it remains unchallenged.

We’re told that dogs evolved from wolves. Or coyotes, or foxes, or… You get it. The National Institute Of Health states “American dogs form a monophyletic lineage that likely originated in Siberia and dispersed into the Americas alongside people.” The NIH put it perfectly, “likely” denotes guesswork, not fact.

There’s one thing that makes me think dogs could have come with those East Asian explorers who crossed the Bering Strait. Native American tribes clearly show physical traces of Asian ancestry AND they have had dogs since day-one. So it makes sense that dogs were brought to America by the first Asians. At the same time, in the same thought…

… Many canine theologists believe that dogs did not descend from wolves but in fact were created as humans became human enough to appreciate, care for and actually love dogs.

Wikipedia, among the most respected research sources, states “The earliest evidence for dogs in the Americas can be found in Danger Cave, Utah, a site which has been dated to between 9,000 and 10,000 years BC.” OK, but where did they come from?

We know dogs went south, thanks the mummified body of a domestic dog found in a 13,500-year-old site in the state of New Mexico! It makes perfect sense that those first “immigrants” traveled south to get warm. (It’s okay to smile)

Another Wikipedia writer stated “There is clear evidence that dogs were derived from grey wolves during the initial phases of domestication.” Whoa! I contribute to Wikipedia but as a wordsmith I can spot a gap in a word trail easier than a hound can follow a ground scent! If that is “evidence” of where dogs actually came from, let’s see tangible proof. Here’s some facts you can bank on.

The internet has exploded to over 193,411 active websites in 2024 but finally, a few dog-sites are acknowledging the FACT that we still don’t know where dogs came from. One of our Science and Advisory Board members, Dr. Roberta Lee, D.D., Ph.D. has four PhD degrees, one of which is Comparative Religion. She was among the first to publicly state (on her TV show) that “dogs came from Heaven” and since the origin/evolution of the canine remains unknown and therefore unproven, most dog owners would agree with Dr. Lee!

In point of fact: Anthropologists do not even agree on when and where humans originated!!!

And to further complicate ‘where dogs came from’, in 2024 a lot of scientists/theorists are quietly murmuring about other planets that had space travel. We’ve been to the moon and to Mars so I’ll leave you with that thought as you stroke your dog and wonder WHERE he or she really came from…
