"Fox Terrier" Tales and Ted Young

by Winnie Stout

Alan's stories about Ted Young reminded me of an encounter many years ago when I was showing "Paddy", Eng. Am. Ch. Laurel Drive. Paddy, normally a placid individual, occasionally found some rather antisocial ways of entertaining himself.

It was at the Hartford show, held in February in an armory and always terribly crowded, as it is in a large city and they solicit spectators who jam the aisles. I had Paddy under my arm.

Ted went by with Ch. Sagamore Toccoa, the BIS blonde Cocker bitch, under HIS arm. Her splendid ears had been groomed out as only Ted could do it. As 12 inches of blonde fluff wafted by Paddy, he simply leaned out and swallowed an entire ear without making a sound. Ted turned around as his progress came to an abrupt halt to find his bitch's ear down a Smooth’s gullet. Toccoa was uttering loud shrieks as Paddy clamped down, gurgling evilly.

I choked Paddy off as Ted extracted the ear, now covered with slime but otherwise little the worse for wear, thank God. I have to say that Ted was a perfect gentleman about the whole thing and with a re-grooming, she went on to BIS!

On an earlier occasion, I was showing Paddy from Open in Winners and Jane Forsyth had a puppy dog of the Farrells. Without any warning, Paddy grabbed the puppy by the cheek. The puppy began to scream and the entire ring was in an uproar. As I was again choking him off, the ever practical Jane went to Paddy's rear end, grabbed his testicles and began to twist. Now it was Paddy's turn to utter a loud yelp - he had met his match and let go immediately! Jane got Winners, but Paddy fortunately went on to sire several litters!

It was during the "Alan summer" in England and I was watching Smooths at a championship show when Constance Wilcox's "Burgla Poacha" grabbed another dog. Constance was well stricken in years and the other exhibitor just stood there and wailed.

I suddenly remembered Jane's trick, went to Burgla and performed the same action. It seemed to take forever and I wondered, "How many rotations before they come off in your hand?" but he did let go and everything was OK!

If you ever have occasion to resort to this method of breaking up a fight, do be sure someone else is holding the head!
