Tiniest dog in the world, the Chihuahua is also the oldest breed of the Americas.
The Chihuahua averages 6 pounds of diva-dominance and personality The big-eared Taco Bell dog is easy care and easier to love although his Einstein IQ may challenge some owners. Due to his size, the ChiChi is not for young children.
The Chihuahua has no known country of origin other than Mexico. Sacred to the American Indian, the ChiChi was believed to be imbued with supernatural powers. Today’s owners would agree. Physical hardiness and innate intelligence combined with incredibly huge, expressive eyes even a cave man couldn’t resist, allowed the breed to survive since prehistoric times. Chihuahuas are bigger than life, smarter than smart, and utterly devoted to their person.
Chihuahua Coat, Color, Care: Long or smooth coat, any color, solid or spotted, the ChiChi can be washed in a hand sink but rarely gets dirty. Hand stroking the Smooth or combing the Long is grooming enough except for attention to teeth and toenails.
Chihuahua Personality: Contrary to popular opinion, he barks only to sound an alarm. Chihuahuas build an empire around their owners but recognize and love their own kind so, like eating peanuts, one Chihuahua is never enough. He demands to be spoiled but is surprisingly self-sufficient. Terrier-like, totally unaware of how small he is, Chihuahua owners must protect him from himself.
Exercise Requirements: Extraordinarily agile and playful, he will self-exercise indoors but the Chihuahua loves sunbathing, chasing bugs, and strutting through the park, wearing a fashionable sweater in winter.
Health Concerns: The baby molera (soft spot on top of head) may not totally close so he is anything but hard-headed. Well bred Chihuahuas have substance and solid bone, not prone to injury but others may have bad knees. The large eyes can be subject to injury or glaucoma. The ChiChi may lose teeth early without proper dental care. Allergies or itching are often the result of environmental factors, not excluding medication side effects. A natural (partially home cooked) diet may correct such disorders but take care not to let your athletic Chihuahua get fat
