Jean Robinson has owned Bullmastiffs since 1989. Since her first litter in 1991 she has had over 70 champions! Consistently producing Top 10 dogs and bitches, breeding for type, soundness, and temperament, Leatherneck has produced or owned three Best in Show Bullmastiffs including the youngest Bullmastiff to ever win this award. Jean has Owner-Handled many of her dogs to Futurity, Sweepstakes, and Specialty wins. A true believer in quality not quantity, her dogs are raised as housedogs, not kennel dogs. Chosen to judge the 2003 Nationals Sweepstakes, she is honored and says she is ready for the prestigious assignment.
1.
WHAT IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT YOUR Bullmastiff?
That these dogs will make good attack dogs. Though they are not kittens, they
were not bred to bite.
2. WHAT IS THE MOST DEFINING PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTIC?
Most definitely the head.
3. WHICH BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTIC MOST TYPIFIES THE
Bullmastiff?
Confidence and loyalty to their owners.
4. WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON JUDGING MISTAKE IN YOUR
Bullmastiff?
Besides judges only being able to put up reds and fawns, I feel the biggest
mistake judges make is comparing our breed to (or thinking our breed is just a
smaller version of) the mastiff.
5. WOULD YOU PREFER THE
Bullmastiff BE JUDGED STANDING OR MOVING?
Even though correct movement is very important (and I don’t mean our breed
should move like sporting dogs) I believe if I had to choose, standing is more
important.
6. IS THERE A
Bullmastiff RELATED COSMETIC ALTERATION JUDGES
SHOULD
BE AWARE OF?
Besides covering up white, no.
7. WHICH FAULT IS OF GREATEST CONCERN TO BREEDERS TODAY?
I believe size, mostly that they are too small.
8. IS THERE ANY ONE THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGED IN THE STANDARD?
We have a very good standard but I believe there is no way a 27 inch bullmastiff
should have to weigh 130 pounds. He would look like a Great Dane. So I would
increase the weight to 140 pounds.
9.
NAME ONE WAY IN WHICH THE
Bullmastiff MOST IMPROVED IN THE LAST 10 YEARS.
I feel breeders are finely getting back to breeding
the stocky typy dogs with short backs that our standard
calls for. It’s so hard sometimes to not breed for what is winning in the group
rings.
10.
WHAT ARE THE THREE WORDS THAT BEST DESCRIBE YOUR
Bullmastiff?
Stocky, blocky, muscular.
