Black Russian Terrier Information
Meet the BRT, a true working-protection dog with fascinating history, great strength and calm intelligence in an imposing guard dog body. The Black Russian Terrier in 90 Seconds
Large, bearded and mustached, BRTs are formidable guard and military dogs.
Rescued from extinction due to his working abilities, the Black Russian Terrier is an unpretentious but robust, powerful 29” dog with natural ears and natural or docked tail. The dense double coat may be trimmed for show or climate comfort as they are equipped to work in the most frigid weather.
Black Russian Terriers were preserved and developed by Red Star Kennels in the Soviet Union. The product of 17 breeds which include the Rottweiler, Airedale, Giant Schnauzer and the Caucasian Ovcharka, he is a giant among dogs. Black Russian Terriers are relatively new to the U.S.
Black Russian Terrier Coat, Color, Care:His glossy coat may be from 2 to 6” in length, requiring regular grooming, especially when shedding. Black Russian Terrier size and denseness of coat may necessitate trips to the groomer, particularly for bathing and trimming. His moustache requires regular cleaning although he doesn’t kiss strangers…
Black Russian Terrier Personality:Confident, courageous and self-assured, the Black Russian Terrier is calm and quiet but retains strong protective instincts and is therefore not a breed for new owners. Black Russian Terriers are easily trained but also determined and strong-willed and need a firm hand and guidance as a puppy.
Exercise Requirements:The Black Russian Terrier needs regular, daily exercise for both body and mind. He is not hyper and may not self-exercise so a fenced yard will do but trotting by your bicycle will allow him to stretch out and prevent nervous habits such as barking, pacing, chewing or licking.
Black Russian Terrier Health Concerns:Hip and elbow dysplasia and luxating patellas (knees) are common with large, fast growing breeds like Black Russian Terriers but can be prevented or modified by diet and proper weight and exercise. Eye problems (entropion, ectropion, PRA) and other disorders are considered hereditary and puppies should be from cleared parents. Allergies, itching, or thyroid imbalance is most often the result of environmental factors, including medication side effects. A partially home-cooked diet free of preservatives, dyes, and chemicals, supplemented with vitamins and fish oils may prevent or correct such disorders. EST 1998 Copyright ?
