THE SMELLY TRUTH ABOUT PUPPIES

And Other Stuff No One Told You About Breeding Dogs

Sherry L. Shivley, NetPlaces Network Journalist Award Winner

You settle into spending more time with mother dog and the pups than you do with the family. In just a week’s time they are beginning to crawl around, no longer just small helpless blobs. This is when I put down potty pads next to the blanket, to start teaching litter box use. They will crawl away from Mom, potty on the pad, well, sometimes - and then crawl back to her.

As the days go by, the puppies become more mobile - and smelly. Mom spends less time with them and they potty further from the nest - hopefully on the pee-pads you put down and anchored.

At 4 weeks, our precious Boxer cherubs have teeth and Mom has decided they’ve become tiny gators devouring her boobs. If you have bigger than toy dogs and you go into the pen with them you will experience at ankle bites and leg gnawing and sympathize with mother dogs.

The dam will now go in briefly, standing to nurse, making for a quick get away from her velociraptors. It is VERY important to let the bitch have interaction with her pups even though you are now feeding them 3-4 times a day.

She is not only giving them milk but teaching them how to be a DOG. They are not born knowing this.

The mother dog teaches them manners through growls, nudges, and rolling on the back. Pups that are weaned too early never learn to be a dog. They do not make pets that are easily trained nor are they social with other dog or even with people.

Feeding? As our little ones grow, I feed a rotation of puppy food soaked in milk replacer, canned food, boiled chicken chopped fine with rice, milk replacer and fruit or veggies cooked soft and chopped. I also toss in some cooked egg. This way they are getting everything they need, and it satisfies their hunger.

Along with eating solids comes more poop. They try to use the potty box (rabbit tray with potty pads for now, recycled paper and/or cat litter later) but like all kids, they get busy playing and can’t always make it to the potty box. They have stopped soiling the crate when I begin to teach them about being crated but some of the wee ones get distracted and next to the litter box is as good as in it.

They now know when I “kiss-kiss” it is time to come to me. It helps that I have their meal because I am an excellent cook!

Bathing is something invented by the Devil and it is their opinion that once in their lifetime is enough! The howling and growling is impressive for month old babies.

Scrubbing the floor, litter box and food bowls, washing hands multiple times a day, and handling babies makes for raw dry ‘dog breeder’ hands. Be sure to moisturize your hands often.

I start short sessions of leash training at about 6 weeks. At this age they follow your feet anyway… but after a lifetime of freedom, being controlled is not something they accept quickly so the sooner you start them, the better. If you will be showing your puppy, I suggest you also start stacking them. Teaching them to Sit and Down is also important but they don’t have to stay that way very long.

All too soon it is time for puppy checkups, vaccinations, worming and if you have a cropped breed, ear-cropping is right around the corner. Most breeders I know will have docked the tails and removed dewclaws within the first week when pain sensitivity is very low.

Getting your puppy from a Preservationist Breeder who does all these things helps you and new puppy have an easier transition.

Please don’t think all breeders care for pups in their homes, with cooked meals, training, and clean beds. Only a few actually do all this - for the love of our breed and hoping our puppies thrive and have lots of love throughout their long life.

When you decide it is time to bring a new puppy into your home and you inquire first about price, I will be turned off. If you are more concerned about saving pennies than you are about how one of my puppies was cared for, and the puppy’s personality, temperament and health, then you do not deserve one of my dogs.

Go to the pet shop, get a bargain puppy and pay $hundreds or more in vet bills later.

I think you want a well-bred, home raised dog that will bring happiness and joy to you, that is why you are reading this, to educate yourself. Ignorance is the enemy. You might think “I will not show that dog, so why buy from a show breeder?” The answer is, because those dogs have generations of selective breeding behind them to make them what they are. What is wrong with having a well-bred, intelligent, healthy pet? I say nothing!

If you are a puppy-seeker, From My Hands to Yours, I will entrust something worth more than gold.

If you are a breeder and you have wonderful little babies in your home, I wish you Love and Luck. ~ Dog Bless
