SENATORS ON TESTING TORTURE

Stella Starr, Pet Perspectives

You’ve seen laboratory dogs living a tortured life in tiny crates with no social contact until some drug finally kills them. These 2 Senators want to stop it!

Senators Rand Paul (R-KY) {Ref #1} and Cory Booker (D-NJ) {Ref #2} introduced a bill to end animal testing mandates by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) {Ref #3}. I have a cat-friend in Florida who said last October a similar bill was introduced by Vern Buchanan (R-FL) but it went nowhere.

These Senators want to stop the outdated FDA rule requiring that experimental drugs be tested on animals before they can start on human clinical trials. That inhumane protocol was approved by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act of 1938. Think about that! Nearly a century ago…

Testing human drugs on animals may have made sense “back then” but times have changed. Now we have internet and such practices can’t be tolerated.

I know those laboratory dogs demonstrate results, but they are actually tortured until a horribly “natural” death or hopefully, release by euthanasia. Humans can connect dots based on knowledge that should no longer be gained through killing our best friends!!! Any form of animal torture should be illegal but using dogs or monkeys is “inhumane” and not in the Creator’s plan.

My friend who is a school teacher said it was okay to kill rodents because rats spread disease. That winter, knowing they would come inside again, I set mouse traps. I was being kind but stupid!!! I had bought the new kind of trap that closes the trap door as the mouse goes in the long plastic thing so it is “trapped” alive.

Talk about animal torture!!! What are we supposed to do with the poor thing that is freaking out??? I had not thought that far ahead. I called my neighbor across the street and he came over and “disposed” of the little thing. He said use rat poison because they leave and go somewhere else to die. Disgusting! They crawl off and die in what must be terrible mental and physical pain!

That may be the way the world works but we all know that horses and dogs are different. Horses because they are not stupid and yet, think about this, those powerful creatures could kill us easily or they could run away. But no, God made them to work for us.

And I don’t need to tell you about dogs. They are not just our ‘best friends’ they literally would die defending us! The tiniest little Chihuahua will try to protect its owner.

So, think about what we do to laboratory animals. The cave people knew which plants, soil, clay and animal organs could cure disease or heal wounds. They watched what the animals sought out. They could not write but those first people drew pictures so we can safely say “prescriptions” based on plants date back over 50,000 years.

My gypsy ancestors knew which herbs, roots and fruits kept us healthy. We did not need to torture animals to learn from them. This I know from my grandparents but that would not impress you so I took the time to do some research that would have been buried if we didn’t have internet!

In 1500 BCE the Egyptians wrote a formal list of herbal medicines and the Ebers Papyrus grew to more than 850 healing plants. Testing was incidental but gradually “word spread” about which plants or animal organisms were most effective.

Then, in 1938 we established the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). What a costly sham! It had “a 95 percent failure rate in human clinical trials.” Is that why it takes 10 t0 15 years of testing and billions of $$$ to bring a new medicine to market??? Why don’t they just send animal experts into the field to see what animals seek out? Too easy? Or is it that there’s no patent for petunias?!!?

My grandparents knew a lot about healing. As “Travelers” they picked up knowledge from “the people.” My mother told me the Gypsies learned from watching what animals did when they were injured or just old and achy. She said that even today they still know about healing herbs, clay packs, hot springs and mineral rich waters. They learned from watching animals, not from torturing them to get what they knew.

The ‘bottom line’ is as outrageous as the cost of patentable medicines. I grant that in this century they have to test everything but I cannot forgive the cost in mental, emotional and physical suffering to millions of helpless animals.

Animal testing is “inhumane” which in my book means not human! Look up clay, hot and cold packs and especially herbal remedies.
