Santorum Will Fail

(The Infamous Sponsor of PAWS - Animal Welfare Statute)

by Fred Lanting | April 2012

Santorum, the infamous Senate sponsor of PAWS, won’t get a vote from animal owners due to his failed legislative attack against Constitutional Rights and… We welcome your comments on where Candidates stand on animal issues that will shape the nation's future.

Because this is a major election year, with both national and local races, I feel constrained to burden you with yet more commentary on that plague because, like a virulent disease, Politics creates a fever of discontent as almost nothing else does. You and I will both be glad when it has subsided, but some of us will be less content than others. One thing is certain in my mind, however: Democrats will be among the happiest of citizens because Obama is sure to be reelected barring some miracle or catastrophe (which is the same event, but looked at from opposite sides).

Front-runner Mitt Romney will not overthrow the current regime. Santorum will not do so either, partly because he has stumbled over a few matters of fact, but also because he has alienated millions of dog owners. I do not mean in the sense of any ephemeral policy concepts, but tangible and closer to the hearts of people who love their pets.

The Pet Food Institute estimates that American households’ pet dog population is approaching 80 million. Many dog owners have more than one, but you can guess average of 1.5 for each family, meaning that there are possibly 100 million potential voting adults in “dog households.”

You may ask what Fido and Tabby have to do with the larger concepts such as national security or economy, but please think instead of things closer to home and heart.  That means one-third of the total American population, a substantial and fervent voting bloc. Many have been taken in by the lies of the Rick Santorum, HSUS, PeTa, and similar “animal rights” extremists.

Mitt Romney? let me interject that a few journalists’ concern about the Romneys transporting their dog in a car-top crate {1} decades ago when they were taking a trip, is not going to bother many people. A great number of dog owners either let their pooches ride in the back of the pick-up or hang their heads out the window (even though I strongly urge them not to). That event will not hurt the candidate. Conversely, when LBJ posed for photographers by lifting one of his Basset Hounds by the ears, he engendered tons of unforgiving wrath. Romney is much more a friend to pet owners than some on the left wing of the news media want you to believe.

The HSUS “darling” of the uninformed portion of the conservative movement, Rick Santorum, has long supported the destructive, leftist, and incorrectly-called “animal-rights” agenda. While in Washington, he served those radical organizations. He and “Democrat Dick” Durbin sponsored the Pet Animal Welfare Statute (PAWS) {2}, which has more faults in it than a Japanese earthquake zone. Rick Santorum has been backed by HSUS, a “Humane Society” which pulls in a lot of money yet spends precious few of those dollars on animals. Fat salaries and “expenses” eat up so much that there is almost nothing left for animals. It’s a racket.

Wayne Pacelle, president of the HSUS, is frequently at Rick Santorum’s elbow. Pacelle has a record of multiple arrests for “animal rights” sabotage, and hired the Animal Liberation Front’s “former” employee-activist J.P. Goodwin. ALF, Earth First! and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) are all terrorist groups guilty of such activities as vandalism, property damage, and violence

PETA (deceptively named “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” is also pushed by Righteous Rick and is even worse. This group of terrorists has broken into science labs where cures for cancer and other human and animal diseases are being discovered, turning animals loose to be slaughtered by vehicles on highways. PETA is a powerful lobby, using dim-witted or uninformed movie stars to promote their communistic negation of human rights while driving toward complete elimination of meat-eating, leather-wearing, dairy farmers and pet-owning people.

Santorum’s legislation lent legitimacy to phony “animal rightist” causes on Capitol Hill. And defying logic, Rick Santorum even snookered a lot of Evangelical and Tea Party support. However, it has been claimed, with good reason, that “collaboration with the militant animal rights agenda is such a severe …assault on …liberty, that all of his conservative credentials are suspect.” Next time you go to see Lady Liberty on Ellis Island in New York Harbor, ask the boat captain to go around it to see if there is a knife stuck in her back. Shades of Brutus and his collaborators!

Constitutionalists and other conservatives need to make their friends aware that HSUS and other groups (including the USDA!) {3} have promoted the destruction of private property rights including those involving pet ownership. Santorum “prohibited dissenting testimony during his Senate hearings on PAWS, instead choosing to surround himself with animal rights activists.” No opponents of the bill were permitted to testify. The object was to eliminate hobby breeders and most rescuers via USDA restrictions and to clamp down on “every buyer and seller of a dog for hunting, security and breeding purposes… and targeted [specific] dog breeds.” Study the http://saova.org/ website and look for key words such as “legislative” and “roll call.”

Fred LantingA politician claiming to be conservative but allying and aligning himself with left-wing activist organizations, talking about freedom but coercing-threatening AKC until they knuckled under and endorsed him, is simply not the patriotic conservative he pretends to be. Santorum is a proponent of big-government strong-arm tactics who is willing to sacrifice our freedoms.

SAOVA hit the nail on the head when they stated that Santorum and Durbin’s anti-domestic animal campaign is an attack on personal property and privacy rights, and an attempt to shut down all domestic animal breeding while simultaneously further crippling US jobs and economy.
