Jill Bregy, Irish Wolfhound Breed Representative

Certified Irish Wolfhound Representative: Jill Bregy & Ch. Wildisle WarlockIn our breed, the overall characteristics are courage, gentleness, independence, intelligence, nobleness and, above all, sensitivity. It is this sensitivity, to me, that makes our breed so special. This is what makes them seem so human, for it tunes them in to our personality and that of others. The ideal temperament is one that is stable, and able to size up people and situations before deciding whether to accept them. Being able to differentiate friend from foe is something that is written about in the early history of our breed. The eyes are truly the windows of the soul and it is through them that we see the wolfhound's evaluation of the world around him.

Photo: Multiple BIS/BISS. Ch. Wildisle Warlock, whelped 4/1/73, is one of the most famous dogs of the 20th century. The only dog winning 4 National Specialties, 3 Canadian Nationals and 4 IWANE (New England Specialties). Remarkably entering and winning 11 Specialties. He has sired over 50 champions and continues to put his stamp on his descendants generations later.

Wildisle, Reg. Established in 1966, has produced over 40 homebred AKC champions, from only 14 litters including Specialty, Group and Best in Show winners: multiple Canadian Champions, and International Champion. I have judged 24 Specialties around the World; written a book on the breed, lectured extensively on the breed here and abroad, and completed videos on "Understanding the Standard" and "Evaluating Irish Wolfhound Puppies" For questions, email jrbregy@mindspring.com or call 203-227-0917

Cheryl Riggs, Irish Wolfhound Breed Representative

The Irish Wolfhound is not like any other breed. I could repeat all of the wonderful things that the other breed Reps have said as it is certainly all very true and correct. But for me the following is how I feel about this amazing friend. Over the years I have come to realize that they are more like a relative. There are those Parent Hounds, they are forever checking on your well being and telling you what to do next, they watch the children, and help with dinner, they would give their life for you. There are those sibling Hounds, that fight you for that special spot on the couch, and stand in front of the TV during your favorite show, and take your favorite pillow. The Spouse Hound, who takes over your side of the bed and snores after a hard day. The children who run through the house and leave their toys all over the place for you to trip on. Some will be great eaters and still be thin, others will eat very little and get fat. I could talk about the history of the breed or about their loyalty, but to be totally honest they are always and forever a big part of your family. Like a family member, when they pass, you grieve when you have say goodbye. You will always remember what made them so special in your life. They have a short life span like most giant breeds and giant people. And never in my life have I ever regretted knowing any of them or wished I had never known them because they passed at a young age. Once you live with an Irish Wolfhound you will always live with an Irish Wolfhound. And once you have you will understand this introduction.

Sue McClure, Irish Wolfhound Breed Representative

Certified Irish Wolfhound Representative: Sue McClure, photo: Historical IW BalbriganThe Irish Wolfhound originated with the Celts as the largest sighthound.  He maintains sighthound shape for speed, yet possesses the power to bring down large game and wolves. Giant breeds have longer growth stages and shorter lifespans than smaller breeds, a major element one faces as breeders work to extend the lifespan. They are very empathetic dogs that love to be with their owners. Puppies can be exuberant and because of their extended "puppy years," Irish Wolfhounds are not for those who equate size with machismo. It takes IW a full 3+ years to mature into laid back adults.  They are good house dogs that should not be relegated to a back yard existence. For more information please visit the Irish Wolfhound Club of America.

Photo: There are many examples of Irish wolfhounds I could submit but I chose Balbricken of Ambleside, born in 1931, because he could not only win in today's ring, but he epitomizes the historical figure of a rough coated greyhound type dog of commanding size and appearance that would be at home, nose-to-the-wind on a high hill covered in heather...

Hounds of Legacy I've been with Irish Wolfhounds for 40 years. It is a breed close to my heart. I want to protect their health while maintaining their history as a true hunting hound in conformation and that wonderful temperament and kind heart that they possess. I don’t breed often but generally know where there are litters planned and I am happy to talk with anyone about the breed. Please contact me through email sumac9202@gmail.com or call 850-478-9202
