DO POODLES…..?
The breed standard states it best in the opening paragraph: "a very active, intelligent and elegant appearing dog . . . . the Poodle has about him an air of distinction and dignity peculiar to himself. This distinction is beautifully represented by the female pictured at right, Ch. Ridgewood's Starlight Express (sire: Ch. Rojean's Love Affair - dam: Ch. Ridgewood's Wish Upon A Star) as she stands proudly in the big ring at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Her Handler is Richard F. Sedlack. Fondly known as Electra to her friends and fans, she is a multiple group winner and multiple Specialty Best-In-Show winner that finished 2004 ranked as #6 Standard Poodle in the U.S. Her owner says she is indeed active and intelligent. Electra is a "show dog" but she is a lot more than just a beauty queen. She's a daily companion, entertainer,
official hostess, and keeps a busy social calendar.
As with any highly intelligent being, the brain should be exercised as much as the body. If you do not provide enough mental stimulation for your Poodle, please do not be surprised or upset when they choose to entertain themselves. Some may argue, but those who are owned by poodles will agree -- this is a breed with a personality all its own, and YES, they DO have a sense of humor and enjoy just about any game you can imagine (except perhaps chess or poker).
Physical requirements for poodles will, of course, vary based upon the individual dog, their size and age. However, in general, this is a dog that does require moderate exercise on a regular basis. You can live comfortably in a small apartment or loft, as long as there is ample opportunity for your poodle to exercise and burn off excess energy. Poodles love to run, jump, swim and fetch. Especially the "swim" part. If you are close to a dog-friendly beach or lake, give your dog a special treat, but use good judgment regarding whether to allow him to swim or play off leash if other dogs are present.
Because of their intelligence, Poodles are quick to learn and eager to please. They EXCEL in any performance event they are given the opportunity to participate in. However, Poodle intelligence can cause them to become bored with constant repetition of the same exercise, so it is necessary to be creative and imaginative while training.
We have selected some outstanding dogs, doing what poodles do so well. But wait, let's play the game. We'll ask the question and, we'll answer it too! But we would love to hear from you about your poodle because we'll bet – your Poodles Does! Send photos and captions to Breed Editor: C. M. McGinnis

Q: And When Do Poodles Fly?
A: When The Bar Is High Enough!
Because this is an intelligent, long-lived breed, it is very important to research breeders prior to falling in love with a little ball of fluff. It is also important to realize that just like people, different poodle families can have different personality traits, and this is not a one-size fits all type of breed. It is wise to try research different breeders and try to visit different poodles to see what personality might fit best with your family.

Tugs - Canem-Dei Tudorose Rupurt CD, JH, CGC, HIC
The fact is, there isn't much they can't do and do it as well as any other breed. The Poodle is limited only by the owner's imagination, training skill, and ability to keep a straight face!

Q: Are Poodles easy to leash train?
A: Always, but especially when they are Service Dogs!
Ridgewood's White Chocolate, owned by Susan Fleisher
As with most popular breeds, many people have taken to breeding them for fun and/or profit. A reputable breeder will run many tests on their dogs prior to breeding, and will select a stud dog based upon what will produce the best and healthiest poodles possible. Profits are not a consideration in responsible breeding, and frequently are not seen. Copies of these test results should be provided upon request. Many breeders are very proud of what they do as far as researching the health and testing, and they very willingly provide copies of health testing even to those just "shopping" and not ready to make a commitment yet.

Q: Do Poodles fit into any lifestyle?

A: Did you say do they love children and dogs and trips to the park and learning new things and helping their owners enjoy life? Is that what you said????
Susan Fleisher - the founder of Poodle Health Registery and her friends. Cricket's duties include assisting Susan with removing clothes (by grabbing sleeves or slacks & tugging). Picking up dropped items, retrieving items when asked. She answers that question as capably as she fits the role of Service Dog.

Q: Do Poodles Have Fancy Tastes?

A: Well yes, but they only go for pheasant in the field.
Tudorose True Blue CD is a superb retriever and obedience dog!
A reputable breeder will breed trying to meet the breed standard, and not breed for a specific market desire or for "designer dogs", such as the mixes seen so often for outrageous prices (golden-doodles, labra-doodles, cock-a-poos, etc.)
