Many of the new Toy Fox Terrier breeders and fanciers are not aware of the breed’s long heritage as a working Terrier.
TFTs were the Feists and Varmint dogs so commonly found in rural and suburban areas in years passed. They cleared the house and barn of rodents, rid the garden of woodchucks and kept the foxes and raccoons out of the henhouse. They played with the children and slept in their human’s bed when allowed.
Toy Fox Terriers have always been the perfect all around dog. It’s good to see the addition of the Weight Pull to performance competition as it is a fun way for our little athletes to “show their stuff.” The Weight Pull does bear a direct relationship to the type of work these little guys were bred to do.
Strong, muscular legs with good rear drive, so necessary for running down prey and pulling it from its den, and proper depth of chest for stamina under stress translate into the ability to pull weights many times the TFT’s own.
The Toy Fox Terriers pictured in this article have just started training for the Weight Pull competition at the SATHY® Expo being held in Helsinki, Finland this September.
SATHY® is a group of working breed fanciers from Finland and the Toy Fox Terrier is one of their main breeds.
Visit http://expo.sathy.org for more information. You will find their Rat Race© competition (strictly for the TFT only) quite innovative.
Toy Fox Terriers; Elvira and Benjamin are American imports, bred by Margo Carter of Lexington, SC.
