The working type German Shepherd Dogs, mostly either Czech or East German in origin, tend to be what the founder of the breed, Max Von Stephanitz, had in mind when the breed was created. Dark, either sable or black and red, some are black, smaller ears, somewhat lighter in bone and shorter backed than other import types. The RinTinTin type of German Shepherd, with unequaled work ethic, they are bred for and excel in border patrol and police work.
The kindness and consistency with which this type is trained determines behavior. Often they are seen as being aggressive but that is untrue as this is in no way a vicious dog. They are very loving with their family, watchful of strangers, and serious about protecting their people. STRENGTH OF CHARACTER IS PARAMOUNT. Combined with strong nerves and great trainability, this German Shepherd Dog is an unsurpassed candidate for police, search and rescue, and guide dog work. This is the dog who would willingly lay down his life for you, while lovingly guarding you, your child, or an elderly family member.

The Standard states males should look masculine, females feminine. The breed is extremely versatile, able to baby-sit the children, protect the home, serve as Seeing Eye dogs, Search and Rescue, or tend to a flock of sheep. They should have oval bone, be agile and able to work but they don’t have to race madly around the ring to show the right movement.
Too many people only care about side gait or one feature without knowing what an overall GSD can be. They should not walk on their hocks and pasterns and the features of type should be strong but not too exaggerated. They are among the most loyal of breeds because they have such a strong bonding instinct. They demand to be with you and they need to feel needed. Give your German Shepherd Dog a job to do, like Jim Moses did with our Dallas, and you cannot have a better all around companion. We are proud to have the #1 Dog All Breeds but above all, Dallas is our best friend.

Harlwood Farms is well known for top Great Danes and Miniature horses but Betty Lou’s first AKC litter was German Shepherds, some 36 years ago. She and Don are solid “Shepherd people” along with the distinguished co-owners, breeders, and the handler who make up Dallas’ support team. Although they love black and white, Betty Lou laughingly says the GSD are “grandfathered” in color-wise and Dallas and their granddaughter are best friends. Don and Betty Lou live in Simpsonville SC and have four children and six grandchildren. Phone: 864-963-6019
