German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian)Certified German Shepherd Breed Representative: Don & Betty Lou Wood

The Standard states males should look masculine, females feminine. You ought to be able to tell which gender you’re looking at because males should have a strong head (and character) and exude masculinity. The breed is extremely versatile, able to baby sit the children, protect the home, serve as Seeing Eye dogs, Search and Rescue, or tend to a flock of sheep. They should have oval bone and be agile and able to work but they don’t have to race madly around the ring to show the right movement. This is such a popular breed that you want to be sure to look for a dog with the right characteristics. Too many people breed just for side gait or one feature without knowing what an overall GSD can be. They should not walk on their hocks and pasterns and the features of type should be strong but not too exaggerated. They are among the most loyal of breeds because they have such a strong bonding instinct. They demand to be with you and they need to feel needed. Give your Shepherd a job to do, like Jim does with Dallas, and you cannot have a better all around companion. (Wood & Moses).

Harlwood Farms is well known for top Danes and Miniature horses but Betty Lou’s first AKC litter was a German Shepherd litter, some 36 years ago. She and Don are solid “Shepherd people” along with the distinguished co-owners, breeders, and the handler that comprise Dallas’ support team. Although they love black and white, Betty Lou laughingly says the GSD are “grandfathered” in color-wise and Dallas and their granddaughter are best friends. Don and Betty Lou live in Simpsonville SC and have four children and six grandchildren. Website: www.harlwood.com Phone: 864-963-6019

Vom Ron German Shepherds, Joan RonalderCertified German Shepherd Breed Representative: Joan Ronalder

The working type German Shepherd Dogs, mostly either Czech or East German in origin, tend to be what the founder of the breed, Max Von Stephanitz, had in mind when the breed was created. Dark, either sable or black and red, some are black, smaller ears, somewhat lighter in bone and shorter backed than other import types. The RinTinTin type of German Shepherd, with unequaled work ethic. They are bred for and excel in border patrol and police work. The kindness and consistency with which this type is trained determines behavior. If treated with kindness, they will be kind, if treated harshly they will be harsh in return. Often they are seen as being aggressive but that is untrue as this is in no way a vicious dog. They are very loving with their family, watchful of strangers, and serious about protecting their people. STRENGTH OF CHARACTER IS PARAMOUNT. Combined with strong nerves and great trainability, this German Shepherd Dog is also an unsurpassed candidate for police, search and rescue, and guide dog work. This is the dog who would willingly lay down his life for you, while lovingly guarding you, your child, or an elderly family member.

Photo: Ajsa Glitch, SCH H II, CGC. A great representative of the Eastern European WORKING German Shepherd, Ajsa works with energy in all phases of Schutzhund, Tracking, Obedience, and Protection. In her SCH 2 Trial she was awarded HIGH SCORE of 97 in protection, almost unheard of with a female.

Vom Rom German Shpherds - As a trainer-performer, Joan’s Freedom Horse, Dancing Appaloosa, and hybrid wolf-huskies riding her palomino pony have fascinated international audiences in Rodeos, Theme Parks and Circuses. She is remembered as the supreme “bull rider” with a Brahma bull under saddle! Upon retirement, she turned her horses out to pasture and her attention to developing a superb line of German Shepherd Dogs from the best “performing” bloodlines in the world; European Border Patrol breeding with which this remarkable woman and her partner established the vom Ron Kennels. Then, being Joan, she trained her first Schutzhund dogs three at a time, earning and unheard of four Schutzhund titles in 3 months! Website: www.vomrongermanshepherds.com Phone: (828) 286-9768
