THE UNDERWORLD OF DOGS
PART ONE IN A SERIES
by DR. ROBERTA LEE
The son of a very good friend of mine was
talking to his mother about this subject
and he said, "something has to be written
about this to inform that public." And
she said, "I know just the person, let
me see if Roberta will do it." Of course
I said that I would see what I could do.
Now, I don't know whether to thank them or
not. This was one of the most emotionally
jarring research subjects that I have done
today. It ranks right up there with the research
that I am doing on test animals.
I would like to take the time to thank those
individuals who in their own right are very
important people to the world of dogs, and
who work and fight tirelessly to end the
inhumane treatment of all animals, and who
are willing to go to the front line to end
THE UNDERWORLD OF DOGS.
BILL GARRETT
DIRECTOR OF THE ATLANTA HUMANE SOCIETY
MARY M. GREEN
DIRECTOR OF ANIMAL PROTECTION
Georgia Department of Agriculture
ERIC L. SAKACH
HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES
DIRECTOR WEST COAST REGIONAL DIVISION
Most of the material for the written work
was generously provided to me by Mr. SAKACH.
I would like to take the space to include
all of the credits and credentials that Mr.
Sakach has, but that is a book in and of
itself, so please understand that he is eminently
qualified to be called an expert in the field
of the humane care and treatment of not only
domestic animals, but wildlife and the subject
at hand also. Mr. Sakach has been involved
in the investigation of illegal animal fighting
ventures for more than 23 years. Thank you
Eric.
Without these individuals this series would
have been impossible to write. The fact is,
you don't just pick up the telephone and
call someone that is involved in what I call,
THE UNDERWORLD OF DOGS.
These three individuals have and will continue
to make a positive difference in the world
of dogs. They fight tirelessly, work long
hard hours to seek out an elusive monster
that hides in the dark crevices of society.
The three individuals that I named above
have given of their time and knowledge so
that this series might be written. To all
three of you I thank you from the bottom
of my heart for your service and dedication,
for the educational material and most of
all, to saving the lives of dogs.
To Barbara .J. Andrews, who is a dear friend,
and an excellent author in her own right,
and who also has devoted her life and energies
to making the world a more humane place for
dogs to be, I want to thank you too. This
has been a difficult series for me to write,
but a promise is a promise, and for the education,
not the tears shed, I owe you too. I do love
you BJ.
THE UNDERWORLD
I want you to imagine if you would, that
there is a bitch that has just whelped her
first litter. She is in a dark, cold lonely
place and she is alone. She does not have
a whelping box, or a soft bed for her newborns.
She receives no hand to pet her lovingly,
and she receives no reassurance. But she
is a good mother, and she unselfishly gives
to her young all that she has to give. The
ten soft cuddly newborns don't know that
they have been born into a nightmarish hell,
and that the only saving grace is that maybe
it will be short-lived. How will their life
end? In pain, left to die on a garbage heap,
or in some dark alleyway, or maybe having
been fatally injured, they will be shot,
or burned for entertainment. Between this
night of their birth and the day of their
death, there will be hours, days, months,
and maybe even years of pain, torment, and
abuse. They will endure hours of confinement,
poking with forks or knives, hitting with
chains, whips and hands. They will be kicked
and denied food. They will be worked hours
at a time on a running treadmill with no
relief. They will be left hanging by their
teeth for hours, because to let go will only
mean a beating. They will be injected with
drugs (steroids and antibiotics) to develop
more muscle, and stem infection, and most
certainly kept to a strict diet. But with
all of this, the one thing that they will
not receive is love.
At the age of about 10 weeks or younger,
these puppies will have to be separated.
Taken away from their litter mates. Why?
Because these puppies are Pit Bull Terriers,
born with a genetic pre-disposition to pit
fighting and aggression. These aren't just
any Pit Bull Terriers. These pups have been
genetically engineered for the sole purpose
of being used in the most degrading, disgusting,
barbaric, inhumane sport in the world. This
is a sport like non other. It is a blood
sport, and should be rightly named a death
sport. In the year 2000 when most of us would
like to think, or at least hope, that some
enlightenment of the human species has been
acquired, this most heinous of sports is
on the upsurge.
In their life time, the fighting Pit Bull
will endure broken bones, deep sometimes
fatal bites and lacerations, ears, and even
faces, that have been bitten or torn off
and mutilated almost beyond repair, gut wounds
that leave entrails hanging out, and if they
are the ones to loose the fight, left to
die on their own, shot, or burned.
These dogs will never know the love of a
family, the gentle caress of a loving hand,
they will never be played with and for all
of their lives they will live in pain.
When not bred for fighting or from direct
lineage of fighting Pit Bull's, this breed
is still fearsomely loyal to their master,
with a strong sense of companionship and
loving tendencies. What a travesty that so
many are doomed to being ignored, unwanted
and unloved due to the reputation and breeding
that THE UNDERWORLD OF DOGS is totally responsible
for.
How does this world operate? How does it
continue? Where do these atrocities happen?
What type of neighborhood would harbor such
a shame? What type of individuals are involved?
What is law enforcement doing about it? All
of these questions and more will be covered
in this series, along with what you can do
to help stop them now before they can do
more damage, not only to the dogs, but to
society as well. And never think for a moment
that it doesn't effect our daily lives, each
and every one of us, because it does in a
very real and very hurtful way.
