HOBBY BREEDERS HOUNDED as commercial breeders and retail outlets throw enforcement off the trail! 2008 - Show breeders suspect pet shop chains contribute significantly to various state campaigns because in some areas, restrictive legislation initiated by “animal rights” activists seems to target private breeders. Small hobby breeders are frequently inspected by local or state officials whereas pet shops and big commercial pet farms often go unmonitored and unpunished. For example, according to the Detroit Free Press, the Michigan agency that is supposed to ensure safety of animals in pet shops has “never fined or shut down a single metro Detroit pet shop” even though there have been multiple reports of inhumane conditions. Michigan state veterinarian, Dr. Steven Halstead, expressed concerns that “animals will suffer” due to lack of monitoring facilities but cites budget problems. Each state has its own laws regarding pet shops. Some do an admirable job of enforcement but many do not, offering excuses such as budgetary and manpower shortages. Perhaps there should be a BBR-PAC? A Breeder Bill Of Rights Political Action Committee supported by hobby breeders might be more effective in forcing enforcement of pre-existing state regulations and returning Rights to dog owners through Political Action! |
